South Cardiff Interfaith Network – launch of the booklet 'our faith'
Ngakma Nor’dzin Pamo, Chair of the Buddhist Council of Wales, was invited to join a small interfaith group – the South Cardiff Interfaith Network, who meet in Grangetown. She has been attending meetings since the spring, and joined just as they were beginning the creation of an interfaith booklet: our faith. As Ngakma Nor’dzin is experienced at editing, typesetting and book production through her work for Aro Books worldwide, and the publication of her own books, Spacious Passion and Relaxing into Meditation, she was able to be of considerable help to this project.
Our faith was launched at the Salvation Army centre in Grangetown on Wednesday 7th October. Each of the seven faiths represented at the interfaith group and included in the booklet, gave short presentations at the launch evening. The text of Ngakma Nor’dzin’s presentation is below.
A copy of this interfaith booklet can be purchased at Lulu.com.
Presentation - Buddhism, 7th October, Ngakma Nor’dzin Pamo
“I
am delighted to be part of the South Cardiff Interfaith Network and
to have the opportunity to meet with a variety of faith
practitioners, who are actively living their lives through the
principles of their own faith, in order to be kind and considerate
people in our community. Living as a religious person is of great
benefit to our communities. Actively engaging in dialogue with those
of other faiths is equally as valuable, for the development of
communities based in honour, respect and kindness.
Buddhism
is a religion of method rather than truth. This means that there is
no one, central book or doctrine that all Buddhists follow. The
principle of Buddhism is the development of wisdom and compassion;
these could also be called the development of awareness and the
enactment of kindness. To discover that these two wings of practice
are in essence the same—and inseparable—is to awaken. ‘Buddha’
means ‘The one who has Awakened’. Buddhism teaches that all
beings have beginningless Buddha nature within them – all we have
to do is awaken.
Because
it teaches method rather than truth, Buddhism manifests in many
different styles and forms depending on the culture in which it is
found. Thai Buddhism, for example, will look quite different to
Tibetan Buddhism. The methods of practice will differ; the choice of
language to express the path of awakening will differ; and the
imagery and ritual aspects of Buddhist practice will differ. Each
manifestation of the Buddhist religion will be coloured by the
culture and history of where it exists, and by the teachers who have
gained realisation and shared their experience.
The
underlying principle that will be common to all Buddhist
practitioners is the development of wisdom and the manifestation of
active compassion. Buddhists try to be kind people. Buddhists try to
have awareness of the needs of others. Buddhists try to live their
lives with honour and integrity, without harming others.
As
Buddhism is a religion of method, it is essentially non-sectarian. It
recognises that there are many paths to awakening; that there are
many ways to develop awareness and wisdom; that there are many ways
to express kindness and compassion. Hence Buddhists are naturally
drawn to interfaith dialogue. As well as recognising that there are
many styles of method and practice to help us awaken within
Buddhism, there is the joyful recognition that there are also many
styles of method and practice outside of Buddhism that can
equally lead to the development of wisdom and the manifestation of
kindness.
In
a small way, we members of the South Cardiff Interfaith Network are
contributing to recognising each other as religious practitioners. We
celebrate each others methods of kindness and awareness. We respect
and honour each others’ methods of spiritual practice and
meet together in harmony to try and be of benefit to our community.
With this in mind, we have created this booklet ‘our faith’
and hope that it will be of interest and benefit to everyone who
reads it.”

NO MORE WARS:
PROTEST THE NATO SUMMIT
No to NATO. No to War. No to Austerity.
Statement issued by No NATO Newport 03.02.2014
Wales could see its biggest protests in a generation as 60 world leaders meet at the Celtic Manor in Newport for the NATO summit on 4th -5th September to plan their war on the world. Previous summits in Chicago and Strasbourg saw thousands protest war, austerity and global inequality.
From August 30th people will flock to South Wales for international actions including a weekend march and Counter Summit, week-long peace camp, and protests on the summit’s opening day.
NATO is the nuclear-armed military alliance binding Europe to US foreign policy, a foreign policy post-Iraq increasingly unpopular around the world. It is also the military alliance currently occupying Afghanistan.
War is the enemy of the poor. The world’s 85 richest people have as much as poorest 3.5 billion. The annual sum needed to end world hunger is $30 billion while the US Military’s budget is $530 billion per year.
Money into war is money out of our communities. In the UK, 500,000 people had to resort to food banks last year. While public services are slashed, one day of war in Afghanistan could fund 100,000 nurses.
This autumn the powerful will make their voices heard at the NATO summit. We must make sure that the voice of the millions around the world who need peace and justice is also heard.

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee Service of Thanksgiving
On Thursday 26th April two representatives of the Buddhist Council of Wales attended a Service of Thanksgiving at Llandaff Cathedral in Cardiff to mark the Queen's Diamond Jubilee. Ngakma Nor’dzin Pamo (Chair) and Padmasimha (Vice Chair) joined the cathedral clergy and other faith representatives in procession through the cathedral before HRH Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip arrived.
The procession included: firstly Her Majesty's Body Guard of the Honourable Corps of Gentlemen at Arms; then the Queen's Body Guard of the Yeoman of the Guard; then the Cathedral Choir; then the faith representatives; then the Cathedral Clergy, the Chapter and Diocesan Officials; and finally the Bishops of the Church in Wales. It was a most colourful procession with the yeoman all in red and the clergy in their finery. The Archbishop of Wales looked splendid in his white cloak decorated in gold.
Ngakma Nor’dzin comments: “We sat beyond the choir stalls near the altar, which meant we had a wonderful experience of the full richness of the cathedral organ, but had a poor view of the Queen and Prince Phillip who were seated the other side of the choir stalls nearer to the congregation. The service was joyful and the singing most beautiful. After the royal party had left we then processed back through the cathedral. Thankfully the rain held off and it was a most pleasant and enjoyable day.”

St David’s Day Parade
Ngakma Nor’dzin—Chair of the Buddhist Council of Wales—was invited to take part in the St David’s Parade on March 1st. She was joined by several other representatives of the Buddhist community in Wales, with five traditions being represented in all.
The religious representatives were placed near the beginning of the parade, behind the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress. There were also members of the Salvation Army, and Rev. Aled Edwards OBE of Cytûn.
If we take part again next year, we hope to have a Buddhist Council of Wales banner to add to the colour and pageantry of the event. The weather was glorious and it was a most enjoyable day.

The seminar was organised by Cyfanfyd, the Welsh organisation supporting ESDGC (Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship).
It was attended by representatives from the following organisations:
South Riverside Community Development Centre; Caerphilly Borough Council; Hindu Community; GOT project; Education and School Improvement Service; Valleys Regional Equality Council; Rhondda Cynon Taf; Save the Children; ESOL; The Boys Brigade; One World Week; WEA; Christian Aid; Oxfam; Islamic Relief; Ethnic Youth Support Team; South People's Projects; Welsh Assembly Government; Cardiff Council; Life Map Planners
The seminar began with a highly personal and moving keynote speech by Omer Williams who works for the Welsh Assembly Government. He talked of his travels after converting to Islam when he was 17 and of Islamaphobia. After this there were three short speeches from representatives of Christian Aid, Islamic Relief and Oxfam. It was inspiring to hear of their work and aspirations.
There then followed a choice of two out of three workshops. These were:
Faiths in the Media was a slightly misleading title, as only one faith was looked at: the Muslim faith. It was an interesting and informative workshop and I was shocked to discover quite how biased media reporting is towards a negative view of Muslims. I was a little disappointed however that no other faiths were considered, though perhaps this was unrealistic to expect in the time available.
Faith Tools and Resources focused on One World Week. It was more interactive than the previous workshop and included an exercise to guess from which religion came a set of scriptural quotations. Working with my partner we only got three correct and I did not guess the Buddhist quotation correctly! It was fascinating to see how similar were the messages of all the quotations.
I enjoyed the seminar and valued meeting new people from different organisations and faith groups.

- Faith and development - looking at the influence of faith in the past and how it can contribute in the future with regard to international development;
- Faiths in the Media - how the faiths are represented in the media;
- Faith Tools and Resources - faith as a tool and resource for development in schools and communities.

Regional Interfaith Councils meeting
On May 26th Ngakma Nor'dzin Pamo, Chair of the Buddhist Council of Wales, attended the annual Interfaith Network meeting. This year the meeting was hosted by the Inter-Faith Council for Wales and held at the South Wales Baptist College in Cardiff. The meeting was attended by representatives from the Northern Ireland Inter-Faith Forum, the Scottish Inter Faith Council, the Inter-Faith Council for Wales, and the Inter Faith Network for the UK. The meeting was expertly chaired by Dr Harriet Crabtree, the Director of the Inter Faith Network for the UK.
This gathering is a valuable opportunity for representatives of the various UK interfaith communities to meet and share their experiences.
Ngakma Nor'dzin comments:
“It was a long meeting—four and a half hours—but conducted throughout with great courtesy and respect, and with an informal and relaxed atmosphere. I feel delighted to have made contact with such a dedicated group of people. It was most interesting to hear of the different approaches and initiatives of the various regional interfaith organisations. I was particularly moved by hearing of the difficulties experienced by the Inter-Faith Forum in Northern Ireland.”
